GIS For Forest Resources Inventory
Technology to ‘See the Forest Despite the Trees’

Processed IRS satellite image - a role of digital photogrammetry and remote sensing within forestry

The proper protection of Croatia’s forests has direct effect on both the national wood industry and the tourism sector. However there are significant side effects in a whole host of other areas including agriculture, hunting, building, water management, health, population migration, land use etc. which cannot be neglected. Processes which influence forest conditions are very complex and the reaction times (especially in the cases of anthropogenic processes) are very brief. Bearing all that in mind, we can easily deduce why traditional means of forest inventory no longer meet ever growing needs. To understand the synergistic relationships between ecological, economical and sociological processes some new multi-spaced, multi-material and multipurpose inventories must be developed. Intensive usage of modern GIS and remote sensing technologies are necessary to ensure this is done efficiently, effectively and economically. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management recognized the complexity of the problem and selected GISDATA, the company with respectable references on similar projects in past, to do the conceptual and operative plan for the future inventory of Croatian forests.
